We can tweet, post photos, make bill payments and order food — all from our fingertips. It’s no surprise how far technology has taken us and the places it will go. It only makes sense to be able to register to vote online with our own devices.
Texas hasn’t received that message yet.
Sophia Soliz, a student at Texas State University, recalls her first time getting registered to vote as extremely confusing. Having filled out forms with the county and then with a voter registration group on campus, she felt conflicted with the information she was receiving.
“If I could register to vote online through a website or even an app, I would’ve done it the second I was told,” Soliz says, “just one place to get that all done and have confidence it was filed and done correctly through a state website.”
Online registration is the modernization of voter registration that allows eligible voters to register online, update records, and register at anytime, anywhere. Instead of filling out a paper application, registration would be via internet. This electronic form would be submitted and then reviewed by election officials followed by confirmation of eligibility.
It’s about time we got Texas online.
